HPD Arrests Kailua Suspect on Multiple Charges, Including Attempted Murder on Law Enforcement Officers
The Honolulu Police Department says officers were shot at while responding to a domestic abuse call in Kailua just after 9 p.m. on Oct. 21.
A 42-year-old woman had fled before officers arrived. Police first spoke with the 43-year-old man and then found the woman, who said he had physically abused her. When officers went back to detain him, he came out carrying a long gun, fired several rounds toward them and went back inside.
The Specialized Services Division responded to the barricade, made contact and convinced him to surrender. He was arrested for first-degree attempted murder, first-degree reckless endangering and misdemeanor abuse of a family or household member. The investigation is ongoing.
Chief David Lazar said the department understands such incidents raise public safety concerns and remains committed to protecting residents.
