Google is quietly linking your phone number to other Android accounts

Android phones have been automatically attaching the SIM's phone number to every Google account signed in on the device, including work and secondary accounts, by default since September 2025. Google says verification powers account recovery and RCS messaging but doesn't explain why every account needs the number. Many users are only learning about it now from unprompted verification emails.
